Meritorious Conduct Award 2012
On March 2nd, 2012 the Raleigh County Sheriff's Office was host to the awards ceremony for three outstanding deputy sheriff's. Lt. Kevin R. Hopkins, Deputy Mark "Phillip" Gunther, and Deputy Billy J. Adkins were honored by Sheriff Steve Tanner who gave each of them a plaque, letter of accommodation, and a meritorious conduct pin. The pin, as Sheriff Steve Tanner ordered each of them, was to be worn anytime that the deputies were in their Class A uniforms. Some photos below show the momentous occasion.



Deputy of the Year 2011
Captain Mitchell "Skee" Barley was honored by Sheriff Steve Tanner with the presentation of Deputy of the Year for 2011. Capt. Barley has spear headed a campaign to help deputies both with friendship and with spirituality. Capt. Barley is the Raleigh County Sheriff's Office Chaplain and works closely with anyone involved with the sheriff's office when the trials of life might seem to be too much.
Sherwood Brown

Retired Captain Sherwood brown passed away on Saturday, February 25, 2012 at the age of 77. Captain Brown served the citizens of Raleigh County as a Deputy Sheriff for over twenty years, retiring in the early 1990's. He had served in the United States Army before serving with the Sheriff's Office and continued to serve his community after his law enforcement career with the Raleigh County chapter of the NAACP and as a Third Degree member of the Knights of Columbus. Captain Brown was also the first African-American to attend Beckley College. Through his years of service to the people of Raleigh County, Sherwood Brown made friends everywhere he went. He will be sadly missed by all.
